Resting Bounty
Visual artist JENNIFER SQUIRES is well established in the Etsy world where her beautiful images are enormously popular. The moment I saw her Vineyard & Beach Basketball images, I knew we had to feature them on www.photographyartstore.com. Fortunately, Jennifer was generous enough to agree. Resting Bounty along with it's sister print On the Quiet make a stunning statement when hung together. Both images were shot in Southern Ontario's wine country & are part of an assignment Jennifer gave herself to find beauty in the middle of the cold, austere winter months. I think she succeeded, non? Gorgeous photos like these are one of the reasons Jennifer was named one of Photo Life's Emerging Photographers for 2009. For more of Jennifer's amazing photographs, check out Beach Basketball #1 & Beach Basketball #2.

Inglis Plant, Liberty Village #2
NICO OVED is a talented documentary photographer who is interested in constructed spaces and how they reflect the realities of the people who inhabit them. This interest has brought him and his large format camera to far-flung locations ranging from the austere banlieues of Paris to the dynamic hillside favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Lucky for us, he returns home every now & then with some brilliant photographs like Inglis Plant. Check out 2 more of Nico's images from his Haikyo series here & here. By the way, according to Nico, haikyo is the Japanese word for abandoned building. But more than that, it has come to represent a whole culture of casual exploration of abandoned sites. Huge online communities have formed in Japan as well as North America and Europe where people post photos of their recent explorations and share information about local sites.
Reflections on the Arctic Sea
Finnish artist VILLE MIETTINEN travels extensively, often spending more than 200 days a year on the road. So what does he do on his down time. He travels of course! He's a member of a group called The Random Travelers Society. Each year they toss an inflatable globe in the air & a blindfolded person picks the next destination. Reflections on the Arctic Sea was taken on a trip the Society made to Eastern Greenland. This image is best shown with it's sister print Glacier in Greenland. Be sure to also check out Ville's amazing image of the Taj Mahal.
Nephew Still Sleeping Early in the Morning
LUNG S. LIU is an award winning photojournalist who shot this image of his Nephew Still Sleeping Early in the Morning in Vietnam for a series titled, Origins. Among the original Boat People, Lung's family emigrated to Canada to escape severe poverty & offer a better life for their children. Year's later, in search of his roots, Lung returned to his birth country where he was tasked with the difficulty of capturing the lyrical and romantic qualities within the daily living of Vietnamese life. This image is one of the few that he believes defines this sense of family, community, identity and origins. You can view another image from the series, Sidewalk Dream Scene, here.
Ocean Dreamer
This gorgeous photograph by PAUL FLYNN is what I will be dreaming of as the cold weather settles in here in southern Ontario. The aptly titled Ocean Dreamer, brings to mind sandy beaches, warm breezes & drinks with little umbrellas in them. Yes, this dreamy image will help get you through a snowy day! Check out another one of Paul's images, Clifton Hill.
