PHOTO GROUPING OF THE DAY

                                Photographer Anitta Behrendt

The winter blahs have hit me!  This is always the time of year that I start feeling itchy for spring so I thought it would be nice to post a pic that was light, airy & colorful.  Isn't this fun!  What a great kids room. I love the animal prints against the turquoise wall.  The large, whimsical prints are really effective & fun for a child's room.  I also love the large "family gallery" on the left wall.  I could imagine changing or adding to these as new memories are made.

"Cow" by artist Andrea Stultiens would make a great print for a kids room. How have you used art in your child's room? I would love to see pics.

PHOTO OF THE DAY

                                             Courtesy Vicki Reed

Artist Vicki Reed specializes in black and white and hand colored black and white photographs. Born and raised in Maine, she often draws inspiration from the communities and subjects in this area. Her intention when creating images is to transport viewers to a place where they might find a moment of calm.  I think she's achieved that with this image, non?  Can't you just feel the stillness of the night?

Vicki uses the time intensive Lith process Lith printing technique.  The final results are prints that often have soft warm highlights adjacent to cool dark gritty tones and are difficult to duplicate. Vicki is currently an art editor and photographer for Porcupine Literary Arts Magazine.

PHOTO GROUPING OF THE DAY

                      Courtesty Trish Kitch

Wouldn't you love to have breakfast here every morning?!  Stylist Trish Kitch has turned this little corner of the kitchen into a charming little place for a coffee or a casual meal.  I love how she's picked up the color of the fabrics of the banquet cushions in the photo frames & matting.  While there's a lot going on here this little trick helps to unify the space.  Don't you love the hit of color she's added with the turquoise bowls! What's your favorite color to add "pop" to a space?

WHAT'S YOUR "ARTITTUDE"?

What’s your attitude towards art?  Do you think of it as purely decorative?  Something to complement your décor?  Do you think of it as an investment?  Something that will appreciate in value & bring you a greater return down the road.  Or do you think of art as something that will enhance your life?

For me it’s the latter.  A few years ago, while living in Vancouver, I would arrive at a local restaurant everyday before they opened for lunch just so I could sit at the table that faced my favorite painting.  After weeks of this, I nagged the manager until she gave me the artist’s phone number.  I then spent days convincing him to paint a similar one for me.  The thought of living without it would be like living without air.  I didn’t care if it would suit my décor.  I just knew I couldn’t live without it.  That painting now hangs on my dining room wall in Toronto and every time I look at it a feeling of happiness and contentment comes over me.

For others I know, arts only function is decorative.  It looks good in the living room.  The colors go well with the pillows on the bed.  It fills that space on the wall between closet and the hallway.

I also know people to whom art is purely an investment.  Chosen only because of its likelihood to appreciate in value.  Sometimes this art is displayed in the collector’s home, but often it’s packaged carefully and stored until a time the buyer can sell it for a price greater than what they paid.  Personally, I think this is a shame.  Art is meant to be seen, experienced and shared.  What about you? What’s your ‘artittude”?  What function does art play in your life?

PHOTO GROUPING OF THE DAY

Today's grouping proves that you don't have to go minimalist in a small space.  Sometimes you can create a dramatic effect by going all out. The thing that keeps this small kitchen feeling light & airy is the white colour scheme.  The b & w photography hung gallery style is really effective. Do you like b & w photography or do you prefer colour?  I would love to hear what you look for when purchasing art!
